GRCC Annual Dinner & Impact Award
The Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner and Impact Awards was a chance to review the accomplishments of the year and give awards out to businesses that had an impact on the community. As I have for many years, I was again the photographer for the event. For me the excitement is the final award given to a small business that has grown and done innovative things as a company as well as in the community. The thrill for me, is that often the winner is a business who's people I know.

John Marshall Medal in Law Gala
For years I have had the pleasure of working with the John Marshall Foundation. I believe I have done photography for the Foundation since it began with it's Teacher Awards years ago. Over the years I have gotten to know some wonderful people through my work for JMF. Recently, JMF held a Gala to give the John Marshall Medal in Law to a distinguished jurist who lives up to the ideals of John Marshall. This year they honored former Chief Justice of the Virginia Harry L. Carrico. The author David Baldacci was one of the presenters for the evening. Also in attendance was a large group of Justice Carrico's former law clerks, as well as descendants of John Marshall.

Marshall University Fife & Drum open the evening.

A Look Back at Fall 2010
Photography of Daniel DiCaprio Recent Work
It has been awhile since I updated my postings, so here we go. First thing is to introduce and show off the work of Daniel DiCaprio. I photographed his recent work in the Fall and was very taken by his sculptural pieces. Here are two wall hung pieces done in October, which I believe he created for a gallery in New York. The black glossy finish and small metal texturing were a challenge, but it was fun to see what the lighting would do.

Seeds of the Past opens at the LCVA
Seeds of the Past: The Keith Kissee Collection of American Art from the 1930s and 1940s has its opening at the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts on August 20. This is an exhibition of a wonderful private collection of Depression era art. Mr Kissee has pulled together a very interesting collection over the years which fills his house in Richmond, Virginia. I had the pleasure of photographing the works in this exhibit earlier this summer at Mr. Kissee's home. While photographing art on location can be challenging, the task was made easier with the help of the LCVA staff and the curators of this exhibition. Below is the painting used for the announcement postcard with its details. The other two paintings are just a couple of my favorites. Sorry, I don't have the artist information on those. The exhibition runs through January 8, 2011 at the LCVA in Farmville, Virginia. If you are interested in the exhibit the LCVA's phone number is 434-395-2206.

Joan Elliott Show in Montreal
An exhibition of Joan Elliott's paintings opens tomorrow, August 14, 2010. The solo show will be at the Galerie de Bellefeuille in Montreal, Quebec. I have been photographing Joan's paintings for awhile, and I thought I would share a couple of her recent pieces. The bottom of the two images is I believe the first painting Joan has done of a winter landscape. I find it quite lovely in the way it captures the mood of a winter evening. If you are in or going to Montreal, the exhibit runs through August 25. The Gallery's web site is www.debellefeuille.com

A Legacy of Liberty

With the Fourth of July just past I thought it would be appropriate to post these images from the St. John's Church Foundation's event "A Legacy of Liberty". This after all was one of the great events that lead to the Declaration of Independence and some of the same people were involved in both meetings.

Take Our Stand

"Take Our Stand" is an exhibit organized by the American Civil War Center from the John H. Motley Collection. I recently photographed artifacts from the collection for the Museum. In this case hats worn by the "Buffalo Soldiers", the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry. On this Fourth of July weekend it seemed very thought provoking to be working on these objects. It gives you an opportunity to think about the men who wore these hats, and what their thoughts on liberty might have been as they served our country on the Western Frontier, in Cuba and the Philippines .
